About this route

Along packhorse trails and drovers’ ways, cross the remote, windswept moors of the South Pennines and the flowering fields of the Yorkshire Dales on our Pennine Way South trail running holiday. From Edale to Middleton-in-Teesdale, you’ll tackle daunting landscapes over Kinder Scout, Pinshaw Beacon and Top Withen, and spend each night in a welcoming village nestled beneath the peaks.

The limestone scenery of the Yorkshire Dales awaits in the second half of your holiday, with stand-out views of Malham Cove and Tarn and the stunning green slopes of Wenselydale and Teesdale.

With the best of the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales included, the Pennine Way South is a stunning challenge run.

Please note that due to the high volume of walkers attempting the Yorkshire Three Peaks, accommodation in Horton-in-Ribblesdale is scarce at weekends. If your stop in Horton-in-Ribblesdale falls at a weekend, a transfer may be required to take you to your accommodation. Please contact us for more information.

Your Itinerary

This itinerary lists our preferred overnight stops for this tour. Sometimes there may be a shortage of available accommodation in a preferred location, in which case we will transfer you from the trail to your accommodation and back again at no extra charge. Overnight stops marked with a (T) will always require transfers as standard.

Overnight stops marked with an (L) have very limited accommodation, and therefore more often than not will also require a transfer, particularly on bank holidays and weekends. We will use non-transfer accommodation wherever possible.

The daily mileages quoted are average trail miles only and do not include the distance from the trail to your accommodation. We do not expect you to have to travel more than a mile from the trail to your accommodation; should your accommodation be further than this, transfers will be provided as standard.

Below are the additional costs that may apply depending on your requirements. Dog-friendly tours are subject to a Daily Dog Charge, which will be listed below if applicable. Our standard prices per person are based upon two people sharing a room; if you are on your own, or are part of a group but require a room of your own, then the Solo Traveller or Single Supplements apply respectively:

Extra Nights & Rest Days

As the Pennine Way is one of the toughest trails available to run in the UK, it may be worth considering adding a few extra nights into your holiday to give you time to recover in between stints as you race along England's iconic backbone.

If you would like to spend an extra day exploring the stunning landscape of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, consider taking an extra night in Malham. Here you can take your time to absorb the beauty of nearby Malham Cove, Malham Tarn, Gordale Scar and Janet?s Foss, making the perfect area in which to enjoy a gentle recovery run or a more challenging climb. As well as this and all of the usual amenities, Malham also boasts a number of delicious eateries, offering fresh, locally produced food and drinks all year round.

If you would prefer to spend your day relaxing, surrounded by Victorian architecture, shops and cafes, the small town of Middleton-in-Teesdale is also a good choice for an extra night.

Travel Information

Useful information and travel links that will assist you in your plans to travel to the start of the holiday and back from the end of it are sent to you with your full tour pack. A summary is given below:

By Air - The most convenient major city and international airports are Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

By Rail - There is a rail station at the start of the trail (Edale). The nearest rail station to the end of the trail (Middleton-in-Teesdale) is at Kirkby Stephen (22.3 miles away) but the most convenient rail station towards the end of the trail is at Darlington (25 miles away).

By Bus - There are no direct bus services that run to Edale and very few that run from Middleton-in-Teesdale.

From London - Trains run from London Euston and London St Pancras International to Edale.

Return to the start - The easiest way to return to the start of the trail is by catching a taxi to Darlington rail station. Then from here you will need to catch the train to Edale.
