Pembrokeshire Coast Path Run - South Section

From Dale, enjoy the sandy bays, limestone cliffs and clamouring wildlife as you wind your way through Milford Haven, around St Govan’s Head and through Tenby to the shores of Carmarthen Bay. It’s an undulating route, with plenty of slopes along the way, but with endless coastal scenery to buoy you along and plenty of fascinating sites to enjoy as you catch your breath, from the Martello Naval Tower to the Petrified Forest.

There’s an industrial edge to the landscapes near Milford Haven, with the old Royal Navy Dockyard and the oil refineries along the Pembroke River, which gives this route a dual nature as it dips into the pure natural beauty of Carmarthen Bay.

This route can be run in the opposite direction upon request. Please contact us and we will be happy to assist you.

Important information

The run between Dale and Milford Haven requires the crossing of two tidal inlets at Pickleridge and Sandy Haven.  Both crossings are sufficiently flooded by the incoming tide to make them impassable at high tide.  Pickleridge can only be safely crossed 3.5 hours either side of low tide and Sandy Haven can only be safely crossed within 2.5 hours either side of low tide.

Careful timing of your arrival at these inlets is therefore necessary to allow sufficient time (up to 2 hours) to run the intervening 5 miles or so of coast between Pickleridge and Sandy Haven before the crossing becomes impassable.   If you miss either there is no alternative crossing and in both cases a substantial 4 mile detour for each crossing is necessary or a long wait of up to 5.5 hours.  Before booking please check here for tide times.

Your Itinerary

This itinerary lists our preferred overnight stops for this tour. Sometimes there may be a shortage of available accommodation in a preferred location, in which case we will transfer you from the trail to your accommodation and back again at no extra charge. Overnight stops marked with a (T) will always require transfers as standard.

Overnight stops marked with an (L) have very limited accommodation, and therefore more often than not will also require a transfer, particularly on bank holidays and weekends. We will use non-transfer accommodation wherever possible.

The daily mileages quoted are average trail miles only and do not include the distance from the trail to your accommodation. We do not expect you to have to travel more than a mile from the trail to your accommodation in most cases; should your accommodation be further than this, transfers will be provided as standard if practical. A very limited number of stops will require you to travel on foot up to two miles off the trail, however these instances will be clearly communicated to you if applicable.

Further transfers may also be required due to some accommodations having a two-night minimum booking policy, especially at weekends.

Below are the additional costs that may apply depending on your requirements. Dog-friendly tours are subject to a Daily Dog Charge, which will be listed below if applicable. Our standard prices per person are based upon two people sharing a room; if you are on your own, or are part of a group but require a room of your own, then the Solo Traveller or Single Supplements apply respectively:

£65.00 per person / per night

Extra Nights & Rest Days

Adding extra nights into your holiday is highly recommended on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; not only do they give you chance to rest and recover before continuing on your run, but it also allows you plenty of opportunity to discover hidden gems in the various locations that you might have otherwise missed.

Pembroke is a tempting option. Spending an extra night here gives you plenty of time to discover all that this brilliant town has to offer, including its magnificent Norman castle, a mix of traditional Tudor and Georgian houses, two historic churches and a pleasant collection of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The local area also offers a variety of challenging activities, including rock-climbing, surfing, canoeing and water-skiing, guaranteed to keep even the most active holidaymakers entertained.

Many people also decide to add an extra night or two at the end of the trail in Amroth, a lovely seaside town with friendly pubs and holiday parks. While you are here, be sure to take in the bizarre petrified drowned forest when the tide is very low; the tree stumps themselves can be seen poking through the sand and have been dated back to the last Ice Age. The rest of the wide, sandy beach is perfect for walking or soaking up the sun, as well as being a popular location for swimming and windsurfing. Also nearby is the National Trust's Colby Woodland Gardens, ideal for taking a relaxing stroll and reflecting on the completion of your trail running holiday.

You can add rest days at any of the overnight stops:
